Miller & Chevalier Elects Two New Members to International and Tax Practices

Washington, DC, January 6, 2020 – Miller & Chevalier Chartered today announced the elections of Ann Sultan and James R. (Jim) Gadwood as Members of the firm. The promotion was effective January 1.

"Ann and Jim are true professionals who bring deep subject-matter expertise and a practical, thoughtful mindset to their work for clients," said Kathryn Cameron Atkinson, Chair of Miller & Chevalier. "They embody the best of Miller & Chevalier's 100-year commitment to excellence in client service and a broader dedication to the profession. We look forward to their future achievements."

Ann Sultan focuses her practice on internal and government investigations, international corporate compliance, and white collar defense, particularly the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act and anti-money laundering laws and regulations. Sultan also advises public companies and senior executives on compliance assessments, due diligence, risk management, U.S. Department of Justice and U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission enforcement actions, and interactions with external auditors in the context of accounting and financial reporting matters.

"Aided by her Russian-language skills, Ann has significant experience in advising clients dealing with corruption, money laundering, and other compliance issues in Eastern Europe and Central Asia," noted James Tillen, Chair of Miller & Chevalier's International Department. "I am delighted that, as a Member, Ann will continue to expand the firm's expertise in the region."

Jim Gadwood has a diverse federal tax practice that spans many substantive areas, including tax accounting, transfer pricing, opportunity zones, the non-deductibility of fines and penalties, debt-versus-equity determinations, and earnings-stripping rules. He regularly assists clients with special industry tax issues, including insurance companies, investment funds, and investor-owned utilities. Jim has significant expertise representing taxpayers in connection with Internal Revenue Service (IRS) examinations, conferences with the IRS Independent Office of Appeals, and requests for advance pricing agreements, changes in accounting method, technical advice memoranda, and private letter rulings.

"Jim is a gifted and versatile tax lawyer, equally comfortable helping our clients with challenging domestic tax accounting issues and international transfer pricing issues," according to Tax Department Chair Kevin Kenworthy. "His promotion to Member in our firm recognizes Jim's significant contributions to our tax practice."
