Operating in Venezuela: Additional Risks and Mitigation Strategies
Anti-Corruption Report
In part two of their Anti-Corruption Report article examining the compliance risks and opportunities for companies considering entry into Venezuela, authors Matteson Ellis, James Tillen, Collmann Griffin, and Angelo Márquez explore additional areas of corruption risk, including cartels, transnational criminal organizations (TCOs) and entities designated as foreign terrorist organizations (FTOs); money laundering and terrorist financing; and human rights-related risks, and provide recommended strategies for companies to adapt and strengthen compliance frameworks to meet the demands of a unique and challenging risk environment. "Although there is no single formula or guaranteed solution, operating in Venezuela requires accepting the fundamental reality that risk cannot be eliminated, only managed," authors wrote. "With a robust, contextual and locally tailored approach, companies can reduce exposure by adopting mitigation measures at every step of their investment."
