Joshua Drew discussed the Biden administration's prioritization of the fight against corruption as a core national security interest in Dow Jones's Morning Risk Report. In addition to rolling out more sanctions in the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, regulators are stepping up national security-related enforcement actions, including around bribery and corruption. Despite "fewer numbers of enforcement actions" last year, companies should anticipate more Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) cases given how the Biden administration has made pursuing white collar crime a priority, Drew said. Drew also noted that a change in administration typically brings a pause to ongoing investigations, and the pandemic has created challenges for probes. "I definitely would not read too much into that in terms of commitment to vigorous enforcement, or whether... more cases are coming. I expect they are."
