45th Annual Insurance Tax Conference

Layla Asali, Thomas Cryan,* and Maria O'Toole Jones will speak at the 45th Annual Insurance Tax Conference, a virtual event, on November 10-12, 2020.

Asali, as part of a panel, will present, "Introduction to International Tax with Selected Issues," on November 20. This session will provide a framework of key concepts and considerations for the U.S. federal income taxation of international activities including inbound and outbound activities.

Jones will present, "Tax Issues for Hard Times – Including NOL Rules, Distressed Debt, Cancellation of Indebtedness Income, and Disaster Losses under Section 165(i)," a panel discussion on November 11.

Cryan will present, as part of a panel, "Employer Tax Issues (Remote Workplace Considerations - Fringe Benefits, State Taxes, and Managing the Pandemic Tax Department)," on November 12. Panelists will discuss remote workplace issues that have assumed greater importance during the pandemic. The speakers will address employee fringe benefit issues such as the provision of office equipment for home offices and reimbursement of safe commuting expenses. In addition, state tax issues related to the remote workplace such as nexus, apportionment, sourcing, and withholding will be reviewed. The panel will include a dialogue on managing an insurance company tax department during the pandemic.
