37th Annual Texas Federal Tax Institute Virtual Conference

George Hani, Kevin Kenworthy, and Loren Ponds will speak at the 37th Annual Texas Federal Tax Institute Virtual Conference.

On June 1, Hani will moderate the panel discussion, "What's New at the IRS Independent Office of Appeals." This panel will discuss recent developments at IRS Independent Office of Appeals, including efforts to reinforce Appeals' independence, the impact of COVID, expectations for post-COVID Appeals conferences, and issues unique to LB&I cases, such as the pilot program, RAP, and the use of specialists.

Hani will also moderate the panel, "Basics of Tax Refunds and Traps for the Unwary," on June 1. This panel will discuss the basics of filing and pursing tax refund claims, including issues that can arise regarding the statute of limitations, the variance doctrine, and the recent uptick in refunds based on carryback claims (using Form 1139 or 1045).

On June 1, Kenworthy will speak on the panel, "TCJA Enforcement." The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act introduced the most sweeping tax reform in a generation, including a wholesale revamp of U.S. international tax rules. In its wake, the IRS and taxpayers alike are facing compliance challenges. Learn how LB&I is addressing these challenges in the international tax sphere.

Ponds will present, as part of a panel, "The Evolving U.S. International Tax Landscape," on June 2. Panelists will lead an in-depth discussion of the Biden-Harris Administration's international tax proposals to change the U.S. international tax system.
