Raid Demonstrates Federal Government's Seriousness in Fight Against Illegal Logging
In this article, Daniel Wendt, Saskia Zandieh* and Abigail Cotterill* discuss the federal government's commitment to fighting illegal logging in the aftermath of 2008 congressional amendments to the Lacey Act. The authors question "how vigorously the Federal Government would enforce the Lacey Act amendments: Would it be yet another paperchase creating new delays at the border for imported products (but otherwise not disturb the status quo for importers), or would the Lacey Act amendments dramatically change the regulatory environment, requiring importers to conduct more due diligence on their supply chains."
The article examines the impact of the September 2013 federal raid of the Lumber Liquidators company headquarters, alleging illegally harvested timber, as well as the Gibson Guitar Company raid in 2009, to evaluate recent federal government enforcement efforts to investigate Lacey Act Violations.
