TAX TAKE: The Shape of Things: House Committee on Ways and Means Continues to Form

Tax Alert

Following last week's announcement that 10 new Republican members were being added to the House Committee on Ways and Means, the Committee continues to take shape.

As anticipated, three sitting Democratic members of the Committee in the last Congress – Representative Jimmy Gomez (D-CA), Representative Steven Horsford (D-NV), and Delegate Stacey Plaskett (D-VI) – lost their seats because of the change to the Committee ratio.

In an unexpected development, however, both the Republicans and Democrats will have secondary leadership positions - Representative Vern Buchanan (R-FL) was named Vice Chairman of the Committee and Representative Judy Chu (D-CA) was named Vice Ranking Member of the Committee.

In addition, the Republican and Democratic Subcommittee leaders and members were announced, with the following serving in leadership:

Committee Chair Ranking Member
Health Vern Buchanan (R-FL) Lloyd Doggett (D-TX)
Tax Mike Kelly (R-PA) Mike Thompson (D-CA)
Trade Adrian Smith (R-NE) Earl Blumenauer (D-OR)
Work and Welfare/Family Support Darin LaHood (R-IL) Danny Davis (D-IL)
Oversight David Schweikert (R-AZ) Bill Pascrell (D-NJ)
Social Security Drew Ferguson (R-GA) John Larson (D-CT)

Now that the final composition of the Committee and Subcommittees has been determined, we expect to learn more about each party's priorities and plans for the year, including upcoming hearings and bills to be introduced and considered. Stay tuned! #TaxTake
