Miller & Chevalier's George Hani Elected to Steering Committee of the D.C. Bar Taxation Section

Washington, DC, June 21, 2011 – Miller & Chevalier Chartered announced that George A. Hani, a Member and Vice Chair of the firm’s Tax practice, has been elected to serve on the steering committee of the Taxation Section of the District of Columbia (DC) Bar. His three-year term begins July 1, 2011. Marc Gerson, another Member in Miller & Chevalier’s Tax practice, has served on the steering committee of the Taxation Section since July 1, 2008 and will finish his term June 30, 2011.

“It is an honor for me to join the steering committee for the Tax section of the DC Bar,” Hani said. “The Tax section has a history of being active and providing valuable resources and programs to its members. I look forward to working with the other members of the steering committee to continue to meet the high standards of our predecessors.”

The Taxation Section of the DC Bar is comprised of approximately 1,500 members, and focuses on federal, state, and local tax issues of interest to private, government, and institutional tax professionals. Through its ten substantive tax committees, the Tax Section regularly offers a wide variety of programs open to all section members, including special programs geared toward new tax practitioners.

The program topics are designed to keep members up-to-date in this frequently changing area of the law and include presentations by leading practitioners and key government officials in the field. The Section also engages in tax policy projects, submitting comments to the government on proposed legislative and regulatory changes, and it has an active community outreach program.

As a member of the Tax Section’s steering committee, Hani will play an active role in finding opportunities for members to interact with one another, receive continuing education in their field of expertise, and participate in outreach activities to serve the DC community. He will also participate in a leadership conference in the fall that will include training sessions to assist Tax Section leaders in carrying out these and other responsibilities.

In addition to being elected to serve on the steering committee of the Taxation Section, Hani served as Vice Chair, and currently serves as Chair, of the Tax Audits and Litigation Committee for the DC Bar, which has a four-year term spanning from 2008-2012.

Hani concentrates his practice on the resolution of tax controversies at the administrative level. He has represented clients in traditional Internal Revenue Service (IRS) examinations and administrative appeals, as well as in connection with a number of IRS dispute resolution programs, such as the Pre-Filing Agreement (PFA) program, the Compliance Assurance Process (CAP), Fast Track Appeals, and Accelerated Issue Resolution (AIR). He has assisted taxpayers to secure private letter rulings and favorable technical advice memos from the IRS National Office. When necessary, he has represented taxpayers in United States Tax Court and the United States Court of Federal Claims. He has also represented individuals in collection matters and criminal investigations.
