Miller & Chevalier Counsel Yvonne Williams Confirmed as Associate Judge of the Superior Court of the District of Columbia

Washington, DC, August 31, 2011 – Miller & Chevalier Chartered today announced that Yvonne M. Williams has been confirmed as an associate judge on the Superior Court of the District of Columbia. Her first day on the court will be September 1, 2011.

Williams was nominated by President Barack Obama on February 3, 2011, and was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on August 2, 2011. Before joining Miller & Chevalier, where she is currently Counsel in the Litigation Department, Williams was a trial and appellate attorney in the Public Defender Service for the District of Columbia for five years. Prior to that, she was a National Association for Public Interest Law fellow at the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc.

"Yvonne has consistently demonstrated her commitment to public service, and she will bring great experience and a valuable perspective to the bench,” said Anthony Shelley, Vice Chair of Miller & Chevalier. "Yvonne will be an excellent addition to the judiciary, and we congratulate her on her confirmation to the court."

Williams has focused her practice on the litigation of employment and employee benefits issues before federal and state courts, as well as administrative agencies. She has defended companies facing challenges to insurance benefits denials, allegations of breach of fiduciary duty, and complaints of employment discrimination, as well as conducted and managed internal investigations, in both criminal and civil contexts, for mid-size and multinational corporations.

Earlier this month, Williams was named a member of the class of 2011 "Nation’s Best Advocates: 40 Lawyers Under 40” by the National Bar Association and Impact. The award recognizes talented individuals (age 40 and under) within the African American legal community who have achieved prominence and distinction. Nominees were selected based on their achievement, innovation, vision, leadership, and legal community involvement.

Williams graduated from Northeastern University School of Law and earned her B.A. from the University of California at Berkeley. She is a member of the Judicial Evaluation Committee for the DC Bar Association, a member of the Board of Directors for the Women's Bar Association of the District of Columbia, and President of the Board of Directors for DC Law Students in Court.
