Global Investigations Review

Matteson Ellis commented on the impact of Brazil's investigation into state-owned oil company Petrobras on the perception of anti-corruption efforts in the country, according to the recently released Miller & Chevalier 2016 Latin American Corruption Survey. While the survey found that 77 percent of respondents believed the laws in their respective countries are ineffective, there is optimism as Brazil has ramped up efforts to fight corruption. "The data shows that when governments such as Brazil take anti-corruption enforcement seriously, there is a direct effect on local perceptions of corruption risk and on perceptions of the willingness and ability of government to enforce the law," Ellis said. "It sends a message to other jurisdictions that are in the process of strengthening their laws and perhaps considering the extent to which they are going to enforce those laws."
