Maria O'Toole Jones Elected an American College of Tax Counsel Fellow

Washington, DC, May 19, 2023 – Miller & Chevalier today announced that Maria O'Toole Jones was elected as a Fellow of the American College of Tax Counsel by the Board of Regents of the College. To be eligible for membership in the College, a lawyer must be nominated by a current Fellow and evaluated by a committee of the College's Board of Regents. Criteria for membership in the College include having been a member of the bar of one or more U.S. states (or the District of Columbia, possessions, or territories of the U.S.) for at least 15 years prior to the date of their election to membership as a Fellow in the College, with a career principally devoted to tax law and tax-related matters demonstrating a high standard of excellence and ethical conduct. 

Jones practices in the area of federal income taxation with a focus on tax controversy matters, including Internal Revenue Service (IRS) audits, IRS Appeals, and tax litigation in the U.S. Tax Court, Court of Federal Claims, and federal district courts. She has significant experience in matters involving the taxation of insurance companies, including deductibility of ceding commissions and reserves, deductibility of policyholder dividends, conversion of nonprofit insurance companies, captive insurance company issues (including Internal Revenue Code section 831(b) captives), and provisions applicable to Blue Cross and Blue Shield plans. Jones is a member of the Board of Directors of the Insurance Tax Conference and is a frequent speaker on insurance tax and federal tax controversy issues.
