Marc Gerson, former majority tax counsel to the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Ways and Means, commented on the prospects for bipartisan tax legislation in the current Congress. "After several bipartisan COVID relief packages, the fact that the latest package had to be enacted on a Democratic-only basis through reconciliation is an ominous harbinger of the difficulty of moving bipartisan tax legislation in this Congress," Gerson said. If things don't change in Congress, the path ahead for bipartisan tax legislation will most likely lead to a modest, year-end extenders tax package that also includes provisions dealing with retirement savings and tax compliance, Gerson noted.
