"IRS Signs Off on E-Sig Extension, Adds Secure Email to Relief"

Tax Notes

George Hani discussed the recent Internal Revenue Service (IRS) announcement that it will extend certain temporary flexibilities. Digital signatures will be extended indefinitely until more robust technical solutions are deployed, and encrypted email when working directly with IRS personnel has been extended until Oct. 31, 2025. "This is the world most taxpayers live in, large and small," Hani acknowledge. "If I were to ask a client for a wet-ink signature, the response will be a series of 'you must be old' jokes," he said. Hani noted the encrypted email system "is a bit cumbersome," but it's still workable. "I'm happy to jump through those hoops to make the communications with Appeals effective and timely."
