DC Tax Flash: Tax Filing Deadline May Get Pushed Back

Tax Alert

It looks like this year's tax-filing deadline will get a lengthy postponement, which would mark another big move by the Administration to ease taxpayer concerns about the coronavirus. This year's filing deadline is Wednesday, April 15, 2020. The Wall Street Journal reports that a six-month delay appears likely. Certain fines and penalties may be suspended or delayed.

The move would mark a quick victory for House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard Neal (MA-D), who urged the delay in correspondence to IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig yesterday.

A six-month delay would set the new tax-filing deadline for Thursday, October 15, 2020.
