DC Tax Flash: Tax-Filing Deadline Delayed to July 15

Tax Alert

Treasury Sec. Steve Mnuchin today announced that the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) will delay this year's tax-filing deadline from April 15, 2020 to July 15, 2020.

At the direction of the President, Sec. Mnuchin said in a tweet, "we are moving Tax Day from April 15 to July 15. All taxpayers and businesses will have this additional time to file and make payments without interest or penalties." He added, "I encourage all taxpayers who may have tax refunds to file now to get your money."

An official announcement and guidance from the IRS on the delay should be issued soon.

Earlier this week, the IRS issued Notice 2020-17, which allowed "all individual and other non-corporate tax filers to defer up to $1 million of federal income tax (including self-employment tax) payments due on April 15, 2020, until July 15, 2020, without penalties or interest," the Treasury Department explained in a press statement. "The guidance also allows corporate taxpayers a similar deferment of up to $10 million of federal income tax payments that would be due on April 15, 2020, until July 15, 2020, without penalties or interest."
