DC Tax Flash: President to Huddle With GOP Senators on Virus Response

Tax Alert

The president is headed to Capitol Hill today to meet with Republican Senators to discuss potential policy options to address the coronavirus outbreak, including potential tax cuts.

Treasury Sec. Steve Mnuchin and National Economic Council Director Larry Kudlow are expected to accompany the president, who has expressed support for a broad payroll tax cut as one option to bolster the economy.

Finance Committee Chairman Charles Grassley (R-IA) has not yet commented on the idea of cutting payroll taxes. A spokesperson yesterday said the Chairman is considering "targeted tax relief measures." His counterpart on the tax-writing panel, Ranking Member Ron Wyden (D-OR), threw cold water on a payroll tax cut, saying it would "do little to help workers without paid sick days or those who have lost shifts and tips."

The president and his top economic advisors may hold a news conference this afternoon to further outline the administration's proposals.
