Marc Gerson, former majority tax counsel to the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Ways and Means, commented on Congress' imposition of different expirations dates on several temporary tax breaks as part of the most recent government funding and pandemic relief bill. Traditionally tax extenders move together, with bipartisan support for popular tax breaks serving as the driver to get the package attached to must-pass legislation. The uneven extensions passed by Congress disrupts that process, potentially setting up future fights, Gerson said.
