Miller & Chevalier Welcomes Theresa S. Gee to Employee Benefits Practice

Washington, DC, September 17, 2015 -- Miller & Chevalier Chartered has announced that Theresa S. (Tess) Gee joined the firm as a Member in the Employee Benefits practice. Previously with O'Melveny & Myers LLP and the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL), Gee brings a wealth of experience in litigating Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) matters and counseling clients on the fiduciary responsibilities created by ERISA.

"Tess's insight into the way the DOL operates, combined with the excellent counsel she provides her clients, provides Miller & Chevalier with an invaluable skill set," said Anthony F. Shelley, Chair of the firm's Executive Committee. "Her addition will complement our already strong Employee Benefits and ERISA Litigation practices, and I'm pleased to welcome her to the firm."

Before entering private practice, Gee was a Deputy Associate Solicitor at the DOL's Office of the Solicitor, responsible for ERISA litigation and advice. She represented the government in cases involving a variety of issues, including alleged breaches of fiduciary duty and prohibited transactions in connection with plan investments. She also worked on corporate fraud, excessive fees, health plans, funding issues and other Title IV matters.

"With the flurry of enforcement actions we've seen from the DOL, and the potentially broadened scope of who is deemed a fiduciary, having Tess at the firm will be enormously valuable for our clients," said Marianna G. Dyson, Chair of the firm's Employee Benefits department.

Gee serves as the Management Co-Chair for the American Bar Association's Employee Benefits Committee and is a regular contributor to ERISA Fiduciary Law, a treatise that provides practitioners with a complete roadmap to the many requirements of ERISA. She is also a Board member for the Gary S. Tell Scholarship Foundation, which provides stipends each year to law students interested in ERISA litigation work with the government.

"Miller & Chevalier is really the perfect platform to grow my practice, given its deep ERISA bench, compliance, counseling and litigation offerings and historical tax work," said Gee. "The well-rounded nature of the practice is enviable and offers clients a level of service that few firms can replicate."

Gee earned her A.B. from the University of California at Berkeley and her J.D. from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law.
