Miller & Chevalier Tax Member Lawrence B. Gibbs Receives the American Bar Association Section of Taxation Distinguished Service Award

Washington, DC, May 10, 2014 -- Miller & Chevalier Chartered today announced that Lawrence B. (Larry) Gibbs, a Member in the firm's Tax Department, was selected as a recipient of the 2014 American Bar Association (ABA) Section of Taxation Distinguished Service Award. Established in 1995, the award is presented annually to one lawyer who epitomizes outstanding service and professionalism within the tax bar. Each year, the award honors an individual with a distinguished career in tax law who has provided an aspirational standard for all tax lawyers to emulate.

"I would like to thank the Tax Section for honoring me today with this award," Gibbs said. "The Tax Section has played a major role in my development as a tax lawyer." The award was presented at the ABA Section of Taxation's May luncheon and plenary session at the Grand Hyatt Washington.

"It is hard to find someone that embodies the spirit of this award more than Larry and we congratulate him on this well-deserved recognition of his extraordinary contribution to the tax bar," said Patricia Sweeney, Chair of Miller & Chevalier's Tax Department. "This is the third time that a Miller & Chevalier lawyer has received this award and we are thrilled that Larry is in such good company with Jack Nolan, who received the inaugural award in 1995, and Phil Mann, who received the award in 2012."

Gibbs said his 50 years in the Tax Section were instrumental to helping him "understand what the tax profession is all about. As I became more involved in Section meetings and activities, I developed a deeper respect for the tax law, for the governmental authorities who write, administer and enforce the tax law and for the importance of the ethical responsibilities that tax attorneys have not only to their clients, but also to the government and to the law itself."
