Miller & Chevalier Elects Matteson Ellis as a Member

Washington, DC, April 22, 2015 -- Miller & Chevalier Chartered announced today that it has elected Matteson Ellis as a Member in the firm's International practice.

"I am pleased to welcome Matt to the firm's Membership," said Anthony F. Shelley, Chair of Miller & Chevalier. "His experience, foreign language skills and recognition as a top lawyer in Latin America will greatly benefit our clients with interests in those and other countries."

Ellis is part of Miller & Chevalier's practice in international anti-corruption compliance and enforcement, with particular emphasis on the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA). He has worked on anti-corruption matters in multiple capacities, including prevention, detection, remediation, investigation, defense and enforcement. Fluent in Spanish and Portuguese, he is a frequent speaker on corruption matters in Mexico, Brazil, Colombia, Argentina and other Latin American markets.

"At a time when FCPA compliance and enforcement matters are growing in importance for companies doing business in Latin America and elsewhere throughout the world, it is an honor to be a part of a team of such talented, seasoned, and distinguished attorneys in international anti-corruption law," Ellis said. "Depth of experience in a highly specialized area of law translates directly into quality client service, and that is the ultimate goal of our work."

Ellis has handled numerous high-profile matters in the public spotlight, and has investigated fraud and corruption and supported administrative sanctions and debarment proceedings for multilateral development banks, including The World Bank and The Inter-American Development Bank. For The World Bank, he investigated the largest global, cross-jurisdictional, anti-corruption case (by settlement amount) in history. The European Union selected him as its technical expert to design a program to address compliance concerns related to a company at the center of a multi-jurisdictional, highly publicized bribery enforcement action. He is also founder of the FCPAméricas Blog, which covers anti-corruption issues with an emphasis on matters that relate to Latin America and features simultaneous posts in English, Spanish and Portuguese.

"Matt's depth of experience in Latin America is one hallmark of our global anti-corruption practice," said Kathryn Cameron Atkinson, Chair of the firm's International practice. "His addition to the membership supports the continued strategic growth of the firm in areas critical to Miller & Chevalier's clients."

In recent years, multiple organizations have recognized Matt for his legal work. He was named one of Latin America's top 100 lawyers by Latinvex, which recognized him as "the leading expert on the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act and Latin America." He is also ranked in Chambers Latin America (2015); Ethisphere Institute's Attorneys Who Matter (2014); Global Investigations Review's 40 Under 40 (2014); Who's Who Legal's list of top global investigations lawyers (2014 - 2015); Latin Lawyer (2013); and Legal 500 (2013).

He received his J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center, cum laude, his M.S. from the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service and his B.A. from Dartmouth College.
