Brings Extensive U.S Attorney's Office Experience to the Firm's Litigation Team

Washington, DC, January 15, 2014 -- Miller & Chevalier Chartered today announced that Addy R. Schmitt has joined the firm as Counsel. Schmitt previously worked in the Civil Division of the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia.

"I am extremely excited to be joining the Miller & Chevalier litigation team," Schmitt said. "It was important to me to find a firm deeply rooted in the DC legal community, with an outstanding reputation for litigation, interesting work and a deep bench of experienced attorneys who have successfully transitioned from government to private practice. I found all of that at Miller & Chevalier. I'm looking forward to contributing to the firm's work and collaborating with my new colleagues on behalf of our clients."

Schmitt has represented federal executive agencies and employees at all stages of litigation in matters pending before the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. Her cases involve a wide range of legal issues, including employment discrimination, administrative procedure, tort, fraud and Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) claims.

"Addy is a strategic thinker with a sharp focus on various litigation matters, including both civil and criminal cases," said Mark Rochon, Chair of the firm's Litigation Department and a member of the firm's Executive Committee. "She is fully engaged in the local legal community, is an exceptional lawyer, and is a great addition to our growing litigation practice."

Prior to joining the U.S. Attorney's Office in January 2010, Schmitt served as counsel and career law clerk to Judge Emmet G. Sullivan on the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, from 2007 to 2009. She also served as a law clerk to Judge Sullivan from 2004 to 2005, where she assisted him with many complex and high-profile criminal and civil matters. In addition, Schmitt previously worked as an Associate for Dickstein Shapiro LLP, where she handled a wide range of civil cases at all stages of the litigation process.

"Addy is a wonderful addition to our litigation team," said Anthony Shelley, Chair of Miller & Chevalier. "She will complement our practice well, and we are excited to welcome her to the firm."

In addition to her law practice, Schmitt teaches at American University Washington College of Law on subjects related to criminal trial advocacy and depositions. She is also active in the community, serving on the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia's Committee on Grievances, and as President of the Board of Directors of the Abramson Scholarship Foundation.

Schmitt earned her B.A. from Georgetown University and a J.D. from American University Washington College of Law, where she graduated summa cum laude and received such honors as the Dean's Award for Professional Responsibility in the Clinical Program, the Mooers Trophy for outstanding student in the Trial Practice Program and the Gillett-Mussey Dean's Fellowship for academic achievement.
