Matteson Ellis Named to Latinvex Top 100 Latin America Lawyers List

Washington, DC, January 23, 2014 -- Miller & Chevalier Chartered today announced that Matteson Ellis, Special Counsel in the firm's International Department, has been selected by Latinvex as one of Latin America's Top 100 Lawyers in 2014. Latinvex selected leading attorneys for recognition from international law firms that are involved in the increasing scope of legal business in Latin America. The publication uses a combination of criteria, including a recent track record on major deals and business, prominence of the firm in Latin America, and other third-party rankings as the basis for the accolade.

"With so many rapid anti-corruption developments happening in Latin America right now, attorneys have an opportunity to lead the discussion," Ellis said. "It is an honor to be selected as part of such a distinguished group of lawyers."

Latinvex described Ellis as "the leading expert on the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) and Latin America …. He spent several years in the region working for a Fortune 50 multinational corporation and a government ethics watchdog group."

"We congratulate Matt on this well-deserved recognition," said Kathryn Cameron Atkinson, Chair of Miller & Chevalier's International Department. "His experience in corruption matters in Latin America is one hallmark of our global anti-corruption practice."

Ellis has worked on anti-corruption matters in multiple capacities, including prevention, detection, remediation, investigation, defense, and enforcement, and is a multilingual and frequent speaker on corruption matters in Mexico, Brazil, Colombia, Argentina, and other Latin American markets. He has investigated fraud and corruption and supported administrative sanctions and debarment proceedings for The World Bank and The Inter-American Development Bank. His work has included numerous high-profile matters in the public spotlight. For The World Bank, he investigated the largest global, cross-jurisdictional, anti-corruption case (by settlement amount) in history. He was selected by the European Union as its technical expert to design a program to address compliance concerns related to a company at the center of a multi-jurisdictional, highly-publicized bribery enforcement action.
