"FIFA Bribery Trial Date Could Spur Pleas, New Charges"

Lauren Briggerman commented on the set trial date and ongoing plea negotiations in the FIFA bribery case. U.S. District Judge Pamela K. Chen set a November 6, 2017 trial date for the eight remaining defendants in the U.S. government's FIFA corruption probe. As prosecutors continue to push for and negotiate plea deals, it's thought that most of the defendants will not go to trial. "Even if most of them or all of them plead guilty, don’t expect them to go away quietly," Briggerman said. "Expect the defendants to file hard-hitting pretrial motions to rattle the government’s case." Lawyers for at least five defendants indicated they will file motions to sever, out of concern that defendants will be judged on alleged conduct and evidence not directly relevant to them. "Any way that the individual defendants can separate themselves from other defendants and evidence in the case, they are going to try to do that," Briggerman said. "They want to be viewed in a silo. They want the court to view them as individuals and not be brought down or linked to other defendants in the case."
