Jorge Castro, former Counselor to the IRS Commissioner during the Obama administration and Democratic Congressional tax aide, discussed the House Ways and Means Committee's legislative agenda for 2022. There is the potential for bipartisan legislation on retirement and employer-sponsored plans – a follow-up to a 2019 law known as the Setting Every Community Up for Retirement Enhancement (SECURE) Act. Castro said the scope and timing of President Biden's stalled tax and spending package (the Build Back Better legislation) will impact the outlook for bipartisan tax legislation this year. "Are Republicans and Democrats in a mood at all to negotiate anything after that?" Castro said of the Build Back Better proposals. He added that "both parties are going to quickly look at everything through the lens of the midterm elections."
