Jorge Castro, former Counselor to the IRS Commissioner, commented on the issues facing the IRS's new direct e-file pilot program. The IRS is moving towards developing a free online tool offering taxpayers the ability to file their taxes directly with the agency. On May 16, the IRS announced a pilot program and assessed the feasibility of such a system. While the specifics have yet to be worked out, the IRS faces several challenges including the size and scope of the program. Castro said a narrower-scope pilot would be easier for the IRS to administer, while a broader pilot would be "more challenging and carry more complications for the IRS from a systems perspective."
