Jorge Castro, a former Counselor to the IRS Commissioner and a former Congressional tax counsel, commented on the potential impact of the Internal Revenue Service's (IRS) new $80 billion in funding from the Inflation Reduction Act to enhance customer service, IT systems, and enforcement. According to the president's FY 2024 budget plan, the IRS is planning to spend just 21 percent of newly allocated funds on enforcement during fiscal years 2023 and 2024. Castro highlighted that an agency-wide overhaul will require a lot of planning, particularly in enforcement for which recruiting top talent, hiring, and training are harder and longer processes.
