"As New NAFTA Takes Effect, Much Remains Undone"

Richard Mojica commented on companies' attempts to comply with the new rules established under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) during the COVID-19 pandemic. With the U.S. government only issuing industry guidance in June and many business operations still on hold due to COVID-19, companies will likely not be compliant by the July 1 effective date of the USMCA. "It’s absolutely a scramble," Mojica said. Companies will have a grace period, however. U.S. Customs and Border Protection has said it will work with companies over the next six months to meet the new requirements and not penalize them for violations. "I think both parties are going to be learning for a while," Mojica stated.
