Larry Gibbs Quoted on Changes to Donor Information Requirements in Law360

Subtitle
"Divide on Donor Reporting Warrants Congressional Action"

Law360

Former Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Commissioner Larry Gibbs was quoted on the announcement by the U.S. Treasury Department that it will no longer require some tax-exempt nonprofit groups to report the names and addresses of their donors. Gibbs said the decision, which garnered strong reactions from both Republicans and Democrats, now leaves Congress to find ways to protect donors exercising their constitutional rights from being harassed while keeping a check on wealthy groups that can wield an enormous amount of influence on political campaigns. "This is just another example of where we are hung up in our own underwear in terms of people not being able to get together and come up with some sort of reasonable compromise over these kinds of issues," said Gibbs, who remembers a time when Republicans and Democrats found middle ground on contentious topics. "I question whether our politicians in both parties have the country's best interests at heart or whether they're so hung up in their interests and their concerns that they just don't, they won't or don't take the time to answer legitimate questions like this," he said.
