Miller & Chevalier Recognized As a "2009 Best Law Firm for Women" by Working Mother Magazine and Flex-Time Lawyers

Washington DC, August 11, 2009 – Miller & Chevalier Chartered announced today that the firm has been named a Best Law Firm for Women for the third year in a row by Working Mother magazine, the authoritative source for career mothers, and Flex-Time Lawyers LLC, a national consulting firm advising lawyers and legal employers on work-life balance. Miller & Chevalier is one of only fifteen firms that have earned this distinction since the inception of the award three years ago.

“At a time when more women in the legal industry are choosing to “opt out” and leave the workplace to devote their energies full time to caring for their families, we are proud to be recognized as a firm that provides a work environment that supports the working mother, including the development of policies that speak to the needs of female professionals’ multi-faceted lives,” said Marianna Dyson, Chair of Miller & Chevalier. “The policies and programs that exist at Miller & Chevalier confirm our commitment to the retention and advancement of women, including our recognition that flexibility and effective mentoring are critical components of helping women lawyers to achieve a successful work-life balance."

The firm has continued to evaluate its policies to insure that they are reflective of the changing needs of it working parents – both mothers and fathers – and in recognition of the fact that these policies are necessarily evolutionary in their development.

Miller & Chevalier has a tradition of performing complex legal work within its specialty areas of tax, employee benefits, including ERISA; international law and business; complex litigation; and government affairs. This focus allows the firm’s lawyers to aspire to be the very best within their respective areas of law and fosters a particularly satisfying and increasingly unique place to work. In addition to providing challenging and rewarding legal work, Miller & Chevalier is committed to enhancing diversity within its workforce and believes that diverse backgrounds and experiences bring different perspectives and valuable insights to the practice of law and provide significant benefit for clients.

“The recession has created a shift in the legal industry and now is the time to push through mutually-beneficial, cost-effective reforms that directly benefit work-life balance and allow working moms to succeed both at home and in the court room,” said Carol Evans, CEO, Working Mother Media. “Miller & Chevalier is among the firms that recognize that making the legal profession work for women is good business for everyone.”

Miller & Chevalier was founded in 1920, and the first woman lawyer joined the firm in 1931. The firm’s current leadership features women in key positions, including Chair of the Firm, Executive Committee member, Co-Chair of the Recruiting Committee, Firm Counsel, and Pro Bono Counsel. Women lawyers, including associates, are involved in all levels of firm leadership. In addition, the firm’s Executive Director and four other senior director positions are held by women. The firm has a Women Lawyers Group, which meets regularly to share ideas and provide mentoring to women associates.

Methodology: The 2009 Best Law Firms for Women application was developed in a partnership between Working Mother and Flex-Time Lawyers. Firms with at least 50 lawyers were eligible to apply and the application included detailed questions about the issues that are most important to the retention and promotion of female lawyers. The 50 winning firms were selected based on their workforce profile, family-friendly benefits and policies, flexibility, leadership, compensation, advancement and retention of women, among other criteria utilizing 2008 data.

Miller & Chevalier will be honored at a luncheon at the Pierre Hotel in New York on September 15.
