"U.K. Bribery Act Raises the Stakes in Ethics Oversight"

Agenda Magazine

James Tillen discusses the U.K. Bribery Act, slated to go into effect on July 1. The new law goes further than the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act in several areas; for example, the Bribery Act prohibits "facilitating payments," made to public officials to secure favorable treatment or win contracts. "Boards are going to have to step in and address company policy on facilitating payments," says Tillen. He says boards should get reports from management within the next 90 days to make sure their policies won't run afoul of the Bribery Act's provisions.
