"IRS Could Use Cyber Order in Pitch for Budget Increase"

Bloomberg BNA Daily Tax Report

James Gadwood commented on how President Trump's draft executive order calling for cybersecurity upgrades across government agencies may impact the Internal Revenue Service's (IRS) budget, which has been reduced by $900 million since 2010. The draft order includes language on addressing "unmet budgetary needs" as part of cybersecurity upgrades; industry experts believe this language could be used by the IRS to increase their budget. "It's potentially another avenue for once again elevating this issue," Gadwood said. The agency could use the mandates in the draft order to establish their commitment to making progress in cybersecurity, from a position of "we stand ready, willing and able to do so, but we just don't have the budget," he added.
