"Anti-corruption measures in new NAFTA lack teeth, lawyers say"

Global Investigations Review

Richard Mojica commented on the pros and cons of anti-corruption provisions detailed in Chapter 27 of the newly negotiated NAFTA agreement between the United States, Mexico, and Canada. "The issue with this chapter is one of enforceability and teeth," Mojica said. "What teeth do these provisions have to truly compel a government to act one way or another?" The U.S. and Canada reportedly wanted to include Chapter 27 to ensure fair treatment when competing with Mexican companies. The chapter "is a good reminder of what is considered modern day standards of doing business," Mojica said. "It demonstrates and codifies that doing business in a way that is not corrupt is part of this new world order."
