"Trafigura Settlement Forms Part of DOJ’s Years-Long Oil Scheme Probe"

Anti-Corruption Report

In the Anti-Corruption Report, Matteson Ellis commented on the Department of Justice's (DOJ) settlement with multinational commodities trader Trafigura for engaging in over a decade of bribery activities between employees and officials tied to Brazilian state-owned oil company Petróleo Brasileiro (Petrobras). "Trafigura was required to accept a guilty plea and only received a 10 percent fine reduction based on a level of cooperation and remediation that DOJ perceived as limited," Ellis said, adding, "[h]ad Trafigura been timelier in cooperating and remediating, it might have been offered a deferred prosecution agreement and a greater fine reduction."
