Miller & Chevalier Receives DC Employment Justice Center Decade of Service Award for Pro Bono Efforts on Groundbreaking Disability Benefits Case Lightfoot v. District of Columbia

Washington, DC, September 28, 2010 – Miller and Chevalier Chartered today announced that the firm has been selected as a recipient of the Decade of Service Award from the DC Employment Justice Center (EJC) for its pro bono partnership with the center's legal services program.

"Miller & Chevalier has a long history of providing pro bono representation to individuals and organizations in need. We recognize the importance of providing high quality legal services to people who lack ready access to our system of justice," said Anthony Shelley, Vice Chair of Miller & Chevalier and Chair of the firm's Pro Bono Committee. "We are extremely proud of our work on the Lightfoot case, as well as our many other pro bono efforts, and we are very pleased to be receiving the Decade of Service Award from the DC Employment Justice Center."

Founded in 2001, the EJC protects and promotes the legal rights of low-wage workers in the DC metro area. Within a few months of opening their doors, the organization requested the assistance of Miller & Chevalier in a proposed class action case on behalf of hundreds of injured former Washington, DC city workers who faced difficulties obtaining their disability compensation payments due to the lack of written standards.

Over the next nine years, joining with the EJC and the Public Advocacy Clinic of George Washington University Law School, lawyers and paralegals from Miller & Chevalier invested over 6,000 hours in the Lightfoot v. District of Columbia case, which asserted that the city's disability compensation program was unconstitutional and unjust. Eventually, the DC City Council amended the regulations governing the disability compensation program to bring them into line with constitutional requirements.

The Decade of Service Award will be presented to Miller & Chevalier at the DC Employment Justice Center's 10th Anniversary Dinner on September 28.
