Margot Laporte Recognized in Bloomberg Law's "They've Got Next" Series

Washington, DC, March 31, 2022 – Miller & Chevalier Chartered today announced that Margot Laporte, Member in the firm's White Collar Defense practice area, was recognized as one of Bloomberg Law's "Five Fresh Faces to Know in White Collar," as part of the publication's "They've Got Next" series. This installment of the series highlights talented young white collar lawyers who have already led high-stakes investigations that have led to big trial wins or substantial reports for their clients.

The profile highlights Laporte's work successfully defending a Swiss asset manager indicted for money laundering and bribery, obtaining the dismissal of a federal court indictment against a foreign defendant on novel issues related to the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act and the Money Laundering Control Act.

The outcome of this case "helped cement Laporte's status in the internationally focused subset of white-collar defense. Laporte has excelled through her unique combination of intense preparation, grasp of the complex intersection of cross-border statutes, and empathy in building trust with clients at the most uncomfortable moments of their lives, her colleagues say."

"I think it's an incredibly important decision," said William Barry, Practice Lead of Miller & Chevalier's White Collar Defense practice. "I know it has been another important milestone for her, in part because it brings together a bunch of the things she has been doing in terms of an international client base and helping people navigate what's a difficult system here."

"It's one of the few times in what I do that cases are publicly settled, and so I'm able to talk about the underlying facts," Laporte said. "To the extent that it establishes some precedent or helps others argue against similar cases on behalf of their foreign national clients, I think that's important as well."

Laporte "…is a lawyer who puts her head down, gets into the facts of the precedent, gets into the facts of the present case, and then really has a great ability to synthesize not only what past courts have done but why they've done it," said Andrew Wise, Chair of Miller & Chevalier's Litigation department.
