Welles Orr Comments on Challenges to NAFTA Renegotiations in Bloomberg BNA
"U.S. Proposals in NAFTA Point to Long Slog"
Senior International Trade Advisor Welles Orr commented on the challenges facing the U.S. during North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) renegotiations. The fourth round of negotiations will face a number of challenges, including a short-staffed Office of the U.S. Trade Representative and proposals that are controversial to either the U.S. business community, the U.S. labor community, or Mexico and Canada. Perhaps the biggest danger facing NAFTA is the risk that the president, anxious for a win on trade, will pull the trigger on the agreement rather than have his negotiators take the time needed to modernize it. "That is a visceral fear that is being felt around town," Orr said.
