"Community Relations Vital for Thriving Mining Operations"

Mining Weekly

Latin America Practice Lead Matteson Ellis discussed how the relationship between mining companies and local communities can affect mining operations in South America. Ellis stated that mining companies need to find the correct approach when operating in areas considered significant by indigenous communities to avoid negative impacts on mining operations. "There have been instances where mining operations have been permanently shut, owing to community relations having been unsuccessfully managed," Ellis said. "To address this, companies often enter into agreements, or convenios, with local communities that govern the company's support of communities and help ensure that the social responsibility commitments of the mining company are upheld." He added that companies should following basic human rights principles and employ best practices which include transparent policies explaining the company's approach and how it will address community issues.
