2012: Another Banner Year For Iran Sanctions

In this article, Barbara Linney discusses the legislative and administrative actions against Iran in 2012, some of which lessened the ability of U.S. corporations and issuers to benefit from their foreign subsidiaries’ and affiliates’ trade with Iran. The petroleum, petrochemical, energy, nuclear, shipping, financial and insurance sectors in Iran and countries with which they do business remain the focus of U.S. sanctions, and this will continue in 2013 with implementation of the National Defense Authorization Act For Fiscal Year 2013 (NDAA 2013) sanctions. However, implementation of the NDAA 2013 may also pose significant challenges for legitimate trade with Iran by both U.S. and foreign companies unless Congress or the administration take steps prior to the July 1, 2013, deadline.
