Energy Policy

Miller & Chevalier's Energy Policy practice advises clients on matters involving energy sources ranging from traditional fossil fuels to non-conventional and renewable alternatives. Members of the practice have participated in the development of significant energy policy legislation and its regulatory implementation. Our Energy Policy lawyers work closely with the firm's Tax and Trade Policy practices, as the issues are often related.

A major part of the practice is focused on policy issues surrounding the development of commercial nuclear energy. Our team has been involved in legislation and regulatory activity associated with U.S. nuclear energy policy, including the nuclear licensing process, expanded loan guarantee authority for nuclear reactors and enrichment facilities, and the enactment and implementation of tax incentives for the development of nuclear power. Members of the practice also have background in regulatory issues associated with the storage and disposal of high-level and low-level nuclear waste. On the international side, we have experience with plutonium disposition in Russia and the United States, the U.S.-Russian Highly Enriched Uranium Agreement, U.S. nuclear export licensing matters, and new agreements for cooperation with nuclear trading partners.

In the oil and gas area, the Energy Policy practice has experience with a wide range of legislative and regulatory issues. Most recently, we have advised clients on matters related to renewable energy alternatives, including the taxation and regulation of gasoline additives and alternative fuels. The practice is also involved in the pending cap-and-trade legislation, the proposed federal low-carbon fuel standard, and various other significant provisions in the principal energy legislation now before Congress.
