Welles Orr Comments on Fate of TPP Following Death of Justice Scalia

"Fight To Replace Scalia Raises More Doubts About TPP Vote"
02.17.16Welles Orr commented on the fate of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) in light of the recent death of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia. A vote on the massive 12-nation trade deal, which would unite 40 percent of the global economy, was already unlikely before the November elections for a variety of reasons, but shockwaves emanating from Scalia's death further upend the process, Orr said. "The looming effort to try to fill any vacancy by the administration makes the whole political dynamic around trade even more complicated. It poisons the air a bit because this political rancor gets even worse between the administration and the Republicans in the Senate," he said. "The back and forth on this is going to be intense because I think the administration is going to come out with a nominee within the next month and push hard, and you're going to see the Democrats play it for all it's worth."
