Compensation & Benefits

The following benefits are currently provided to Associate/Counsel lawyers of Miller & Chevalier Chartered:

Group Health: There are two types of health insurance plans from which to choose:

  • CareFirst Blue Cross/Blue Shield (CF BC/BS) BluePreferred, a PPO plan; and
  • CareFirst BlueChoice, an HMO Plan.

The health plans provide prescription coverage and limited vision benefits.

Group Dental: There are also two dental insurance plans from which to choose:

  • CF BC/BS Enhanced Option
  • CF BC/BS Basic Option

Premiums are paid partially by the firm and partially by the Associate/Counsel lawyer via semi-monthly payroll deduction.

Group Life and Accidental Death & Dismemberment Insurance: Associate/Counsel lawyers are covered up to a maximum of $100,000 under a group life policy. Accidental death provides double coverage, regardless of whether the accident was business related. The firm pays all premiums for Associate/Counsel lawyers, but there are cost variations for individuals based on age and Table 1 (medical risk) factors. This cost is included in an Associate/Counsel lawyer’s gross income for tax purposes.

Individual Term Life Insurance: Associate/Counsel lawyers are entitled to $300,000 life insurance coverage under an individual term policy. The firm pays the full cost of the coverage, but this cost is included in an Associate/Counsel lawyer’s gross income for tax purposes.

Long-Term Disability Insurance: Associate/Counsel lawyers are covered by the firm’s long-term disability policy that provides for a monthly payment of 60 percent of an individual’s basic monthly income up to a maximum of $20,000. Associate/Counsel lawyers pay for this coverage via a monthly payroll deduction.

Worker’s Compensation: The firm pays for this coverage, which provides medical treatment and disability payments if an individual is injured on the job.

401k/Profit Sharing Plan: Associate/Counsel lawyers enter this plan on the date they join the firm and are immediately vested in this benefit for both employee and employer contributions. They may make a salary deferral contribution at a rate of up to 25 percent (up to $16,500 for 2009). Self-directed accounts are available; additional information can be obtained from the firm's Benefits Department.

Employee Assistance Program: This program provides confidential counseling to any Associate/Counsel lawyers at no charge to the individual. This service is provided by Business Health Services. Please see Human Resources for further details.

Emergency Child Care: The firm has space at the Lipton Child Care Center in the Metropolitan Square Building. The cost for an Associate/Counsel lawyer’s child is $25 per day, payable by the Associate/Counsel lawyer.

Flexible Spending Account: There are two pre-tax accounts available under this plan:

  • Health Care Spending Account - The health care spending account allows participants to defer income into a tax-free account to pay for expenses not covered by health insurance benefits. Associate/Counsel lawyers may elect to defer a maximum of $5,000 for the health care account.
     
  • Dependent Care Account – The dependent care account allows participants to defer income into a tax-free account to pay for day care and other qualified dependent care expenses. Associate/Counsel lawyers may elect to defer a maximum of $5,000 for the dependent care account.

Pre-tax Transportation Plan: Allows you to convert up to $230 per month into non-taxable (pre-tax) reimbursements for parking expenses. All Associate/Counsel lawyers are eligible to participate in the Mass Transit Account of the Pre-tax Transportation Plan, whereby up to $230 per month in metro and transit expenses can be converted into non-taxable (pre-tax) reimbursements.

Long-Term Care Insurance: This program provides an opportunity to purchase individual Long-Term Care Insurance policies at group rates. Employees who apply within the first 30 days of employment are provided guaranteed issue amounts regardless of past medical history. Immediate family members are also eligible for coverage but must answer a medical questionnaire for underwriting. Please see the Benefits Administrator for further details.
